Sydney Strongman Series 2015 - Round 1 - Results

Well last weekend (Sunday March 1st 2015) saw the official start for the 2015 Sydney Strongman Series kick off at Hybrid Fitness in Granville New South Wales. The series this year will offer a womens Novice field and Division 1 field. The mens fields will be Novice, Division 1, division 2 and Opens (from lightest weights to heaviest weights) and you can nominate to be in whichever field you like based on your own strengths and confidence. The first round of the series already brought in a huge field with 12 competitors in both Novice Mens and Division 1 as well as well supported categories in Division 2 and opens along with the Women.

Mother nature played the part blessing us with a hot sunny 30-35 degree’s and the heat definitely left some athletes grateful for a selection of the events being indoors as well! The first event was a strongman classic of the Yoke Walk for 15mtrs each way with a drop, turn and pick. For those lucky enough to be in the larger fields of Novice and Division 1 they got the joy of going head to head, always a great sight for spectators to enjoy and some really close results with a couple of divisions having 2 or 3 people within 1 second of each other.

Special mention here to Myles Crane in the Opens division who completed his run with a fellow contestant dry reaching and throwing up at the end of the course- great effort to stay focused and finish strong.

Next up was the AXLE TYRE deadlift for reps, some ridiculously strong guys with amazing strength endurance busting out upwards of 15 reps with Big Lance once again laying down the law with 23 reps at 180kg- who says bodybuilders aren’t strong- not me that’s for sure! Also great to see someone finally out rep the usual big repper Tim Goodsell.

From there it was time to get out of the heat and indoors for the Log clean and press and with every ones hips, hammies and legs fried from the last 2 events. There wasn’t much leg drive left and again some really really close results making for an interesting ending with farmers and stones still to come.

The farmers claimed a fair few victims with plenty of torn calluses including one more bloke who lost half his hand, seems the 15mtrs each way with a turn around the cone seeing many an athlete come unstuck. Once again here we saw 3 or 4 competitors within 1 second of each other which over 30mtrs isn’t much of a difference at all. ( I also managed to open up my hand on this event)

The final event - head to head stone battles. After a grueling day of competition was always going to be a big test- especially when it’s for reps in 60 seconds. A fair few competitors zeroed on this event from both mens novice and division 1 while some other guys (Darren Lang) simply had enough of doing reps so broke the stone in half. Great to see the never give up attitude of the competitors from Div 2 as it meant those remaining had to step up and do the 130kg stone.

One thing that was slightly lacking from this comp was the number of women- just 1 in each division and also a couple of regular opens competitors not there so looking forward to doing it all again at Round 2 where we should see a full field across all divisions as we help christen the brand new PTC at Macarthur. As for me I am really happy with my progress in the past year. At the same event in 2014 I managed 1 rep at 180kg on the deadlift and while this beat that slightly with 15 reps!!! My overheads are my weakest link but I am working on them, a lot! Last year I managed 3 reps at 60kgs with the log, this year I managed 4 reps at 80kgs! Now for my strengths, carries. Farmers and Yoke Walk, Yoke in December 2013 I couldnt lift 200kgs off the ground, this event i did my Yoke time hitting 15mtrs each way at 240kg in just 17.33secs- good enough for 2nd place.
I have been training with strongman gear and weights in general since October 2013 and I entered my first strongman competition in December 2013.
